The Provincial Health Office is primarily responsible for the delivery
of basic health services in every corner of the province including
the
supervision of all the Municipal Health Offices as well as the devolved
hospitals.
Proof of this mandate is the existence of several hospitals, health
centers and medical clinics strategically situated in the different
municipalities. Presently, there are three (3) government owned
hospitals in the province namely the Marinduque Provincial Hospital
now Damian Reyes Memorial
Hospital in Boac; Sta. Cruz District
Hospital and Torrijos Community Hospital. Similarly, there are
eight (8) government Health Centers; three (3) Private
Health Centers,
and twenty (20) privately owned Medical Clinics.

The province of Marinduque has a high percentage of functional
literacy rate of 88.72%, the highest among the five provinces of
MIMAROPA and higher
than the country's functional literacy of
83% and a high percentage of female functional literacy of 92%
recorded in CY 2004 .
A total of 58,825 pupils and students enrolled in public schools for
SY 2004-2005 with a decrease of 307 or 0.52% lower than the previous
year's
enrolment of 59,132. For the private sector, 5,402 pupils and
students enrolled in SY 2004-2005 with an increase of 348 or 6.88
% over the previous year's
enrolment of 5,054.

For early childhood education, a total of 3,996 preschoolers (ages 3-5) enrolled in public and private preschools
with a breakdown of 3,357 for the
public schools and 639 in the private schools. 4,902 children enrolled in day care
centers in 221 day care centers in 218 barangays attended by trained and
accredited day care workers.
